US Pledges a Significant Assistance Contribution, Issuing a Blunt Ultimatum to United Nations.
In a move that combines generosity with a firm ultimatum, the United States has committed $2 billion to support UN humanitarian efforts. Yet, this aid came with a blunt message for the global organization: it must "change or face irrelevance."
A Significant Announcement During Wider Funding Cuts
The pledge was made against a backdrop of significant reductions in US support of humanitarian operations. Further cuts are also anticipated from other key donors such as European nations. The US representative, President Trump's Under Secretary for Foreign Assistance, delivered the statement alongside the United Nations' top humanitarian official.
"This contribution will be crucial for saving countless lives," stated the UN's humanitarian chief. However, this amount represents only a fraction of America's historical spending, which were estimated at approximately $17 billion just a few years ago.
Funding with Strings Attached
This new US funding comes with without restrictions. It prioritizes a select group of 17 countries, such as Haiti, Syria, and Sudan. Crucially, Yemen and Afghanistan have been left off the list.
The representative explained this decision by pointing to evidence that there, aid money had been funneled to militant groups. "President Trump will not allow any amount of public funds going to organizations designated as terrorists," he asserted.
Additionally, the restrictions explicitly rule out spending on projects related to tackling climate change, which were described as not "life saving" and against "the US interest."

Issuing a direct ultimatum, the US official warned the UN that it must "adapt or die." He stated that the US "coffers will not support those organizations that seek to return to previous methods."
He, a reported architect behind the closure of USAID, pressed for focused and efficient funding that avoids duplication among projects.
